How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural 22 out of my nearly 24 years alive. I have texturized twice before, which was a total disaster! Each time I grew it out, cutting away the damage over the course of a year, the last time (2004 I believe) vowing never to do it again!
What made you decide to go natural?
What made me want to stay natural? I remember in middle school wanting a relaxer desperately, but my mother refused. Her logic was always “if you’re not old enough to care for it, you can’t have it.” Well, one fateful day I was looking through my mom’s CD’s, and stumbled across Janet Jackson’s The Velvet Rope album. The cover was just of her head FULL of curls. Mind you, it may not have been hers, but I had this thought “Hmmm… my hair ALMOST looks like that wet…” Two years later, I discovered twistouts, and told my mom I didn’t want the relaxer. Although still relaxed herself, she was BEYOND thrilled!!
While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
Honestly, those two texturizers. My hair was so limp, damaged, and lifeless…. NEVER AGAIN!
What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
I should say lack of treatment. I went through most of college (3 1/2 years) without deep conditioning my hair…. what I was thinking I don’t know!
What is your current relationship with your hair?
Blissfully happy. I’ve been incorporating better hair care practices for the last year, and my hair has responded better than I ever expected!
What is the trick or technique are you most thankful for finding out about?
Apple Cider Vinegar rinses! I find even when shampooing meticulously, I still don’t get everything. An ACV rinse takes care of that nicely!
What specific products can you not live without?
Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive Heavy Cream, ayurvedic powders (brahmi, maka, and amla), and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration to detangle
What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
Develop positive affirmations for yourself. Although most of my family was happy about my staying natural, the opinions of a few who mattered (well, at the time they did anyway), found my hair no so acceptable, and I think that’s why I went the texturizer route. It wasn’t until I wised up and realized that since *I* never had a problem, that was really the only opinion I needed about my hair. Haters can kick rocks for all I care!
Where can we find out more info about you and your hair?
Right now I’m usually on a few forums (NaturallyCurly, CurlyNikki), but I’m contemplating a fotki–but I’m not really sure how to navigate–help a curly out!
