How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for two years now. I transitioned for about a year and did the big chop in May 2009.
What made you decide to go natural?
I was just curious about my natural hair texture. I became obsessed with natural hair fotkis and youtube channels. I just couldn’t wait to see my hair’s potential.
While natural, what is the one biggest regret/mistake you made?
Um, I’d have to say getting a weave installed last summer by a stylist I thought I could trust. It was too tight, and I ended up taking it out within 24 hours. It was too late. I lost a lot of hair, and ended up with a huge bald spot.
What’s the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
Ha! This is where I reveal I’m totally lame. I don’t think I’ve done any crazy styles. I rocked a christmas bow in my hair, does that count? As far as treatments go, I can never get that egg protein treatment right. Even with cold water I still end up with bits of cooked egg in my hair!
What is your current relationship with your hair?
It’s truly a love/hate thing going on right now. I’m at a crossroads. The maintenance and styling is starting to get to me!
What is the trick or technique you are most thankful to find out about?
Washing my hair in twists. I didn’t have to when my hair was shorter but now it’s so very necessary.
What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
Patience is key. You hear a lot of naturals talking about their “hair journey” and it’s just that. Your hair will grow, and no you don’t need expensive products to do it. Also, YouTube is a great resource but don’t neglect to do your own research via books, blogs and hair forums.
