How long have you been natural?
My last relaxer was Feb of 2009, but I have been fully natural since Nov of 09. So I guess it’s been about 1.5yrs!
What made you decide to go natural?
I started working out quite a bit, and I would always sweat my perm out!! I would go to the shop on Friday nights (every week)… Spend hours in the chair, then go home, only to sweat it out Sat morning during my workout. I was talking with my stylist about it, and over a few weeks time, we tried so many different things until she said… And I quote… “Well… You can just stop working out…” I waited for a just kidding, but it never came. I made up in my mind at that moment that a perm was no longer for me. I haven’t been back to the shop since.
While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
I think my biggest mistake would have to be comparing my hair to others and thinking everything they do with their hair will automatically work for my own. I learned the hard way that I need to learn what works for me, my routine, and my hair. Now… My hair and I get along just great! :0)
What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
The craziest treatment that I have done so far… Haha… Would have to be my first all natural deep conditioner! I was trying the ‘if i can’t eat it, it’s not going on my hair’ bit, so i searched YouTube for a great recipe. It had avocado, mayonnaise, olive oil, honey, eggs and a few other things from my kitchen. I mixed it all together in my food processor and started slathering it into my hair. It was very messy, looked disgusting and smelled even worse! It took me FOREVER to get the avocado chunks out of my hair. Needless to say, that was my first and last ‘kitchen special’ deep conditioner treatment.
What is your current relationship with your hair?
I love my hair, and now that I know what I am doing… My hair loves me back! :0) I love trying new styles and just playing with my hair to see what I can come up with on accident. It is growing, it is healthy, and it is exactly how I want it…. All Natural!
What is the trick or technique are you most thankful for finding out about?
I am so thankful that I found out about the technique of twisting my hair before washing it! It has cut down on the detangling time after my wash and I don’t see nearly as many knots, nor as much breakage. I love, love, love that technique!!
What specific products can you not live without?
I can’t live without water for my hair, first and foremost! I wet my hair everyday, or every other day at least. As far as products… It would have to be Miss Jessie’s Baby Butter Cream and/or Curly Pudding, Cantu Shea Butter, and Herbal Essence Gel. I can do any and everything I want with my hair has long as I have at least one of those products.
What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
I would tell them to do what makes them happy, and to try not to listen to anyone but themselves. As long as they are doing it for the right reasons, the rest will work out just fine. If that’s what they want to do… go for it!!! After all… What’s the worst that can happen? Try it for a while, decide if you like it or not, then if you do great! If not… Try something else. That’s really all there is to it!!
