How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 3 WONDERFUL years!! I did the big chop in May 2008
What made you decide to go natural?
I had been going back and forth about going natural when I graduated college in 2004 but was afraid to let the chems go. I was also in a relationship at the time, I was in fear of losing my boyfriend if I decided to go natural, young and dumb at the time I kept relaxing my hair because everyone would say “Oh I want your hair” “Its so pretty” “You got that good hair” I was sucked in by the sterotype of what “pretty hair” was and to me that meant relaxed. Once my boyfriend and I broke up (not because of hair issues =o) I felt like in a way I had a chance to truly find what things made me happy. One of my decisions was to go natural. And I cut it off in 2008 and have been happy with the results ever since.
While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
One of the biggest and most embarrassing mistakes I made once I started was using TOO many different products at once. A couple of squirts of oil wasn’t going to cut it anymore with the curly new me. I had put leave in conditioner, curl enhancer, frizz control, and shine booster all in at once. Needless to say once my hair dried it looked like old man winter came in right on top of my head, AND I was at work! It was funny because someone had said “Um I think you have a little something in your hair.” When I went in the bathroom that little something looked liked clumped up paste and glue all throughout my hair. Great day! But I definitely learned my lesson.
What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
I am still looking for different hairstyles that will fit my face. I call it the “Sho-nuff” Hair style (You Last Dragon Fans will know what Im talking about). Again I did a style and it looked cute wet but once it dried it definitely favored Shonuff’s hair style from that movie!! That was the first thing I thought of!! And a curly faux-hawk which I tried recently!
Craziest hair treatment was when I was transitioning and I did a mayonnaise, egg, oil, mix =/. I had heard that it was suppose to help with moisture and growth. I was looking for an instant result but it just made my hair smell bad. I wouldn’t do it again!
What is your current relationship with your hair?
Like any relationship, we have our good and bad days =) More good than bad but I’m still experimenting with products and my hair definitely lets me know what works and what doesn’t =)
What is the trick or technique are you most thankful for finding out about?
THE DIFFUSER!!! When I was relaxing my hair I always would wonder what that big attachment was with the blowdryer! I just threw them away (silly novice). Also twisting my hair while its wet for more defined curls and also leaving my regular conditioner in my hair like a leave in instead of washing it out, gives my hair more moisture and less frizz.
What specific products can you not live without?
I NEED Tresemme in my life. I’m a Tresemme junkie. That’s pretty much the only thing I use in my hair religiously right now…and its only $4-$5 for a bottle! SOLD =) And Argan’s Morrocan Oil, that is what I use now for my oil treatments.
What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
Know that with any new venture its going to be cumbersome the first couple months trying to find what works and what doesn’t. The growing out stage can be frustrating but in the end it is all worth it. My hair has grown so much more healthier and faster since I’ve gone natural.
Don’t let someone define what beauty should be. Become that beauty that they have yet to see. Be proud of what God gave you. Its never as bad as you think it turns out to be (as long as you are in the hands of a GREAT hair dresser).
