How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for a little over two years. I did my big chop on May 21, 2009.
What made you decide to go natural?
About two years before my big chop I started to think about going natural after browsing natural hair forums, but I had zero support from family & friends. In October 2008, I finally decided that I was tired of the relaxers and needed a change! I had my last relaxer on October 18, 2008 and since then I have not looked back.
Who are your celebrity natural hair inspirations?
Tracee Ellis Ross and Corrine Bailey Rae!! Their textures are different from mine, but my goal is to have big, full, healthy natural hair like them.
While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
My biggest mistake in the beginning was waiting too long to trim my ends. With kinky-curly hair the split ends are not always as apparent as they are with straight hair. Now I trim my hair about once every 4 months to keep my hair looking healthy and fresh.
What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
I try a lot of different products and treatments for my viewers, but I don’t think I’ve every done anything that I would call crazy.
What is the trick or technique are you most thankful for finding out about?
How to properly seal in moisture! After washing my hair I apply my favorite leave in (Giovanni Direct Leave In [+] or Oyin Handmade’s Hair Dew), then I apply an oil and top that with my homemade shea butter mixture before twisting or braiding.
What specific products can you not live without?
I can’t live without shea butter, oils (Safflower [+] and Argan [+] oil are my favorites right now), and a good conditioner (Yes To Cucumbers [+] and Oyin Handmade’s Honey Hemp Conditioner are always at the top of my list).
What is your current relationship with your hair?
I love my hair! At this point in my natural hair journey I know what works for me, so my hair and I are able to coexist peacefully. Sometimes I do feel like my hair should be longer, and at those times I look at old pictures and videos so that I can see just how far I’ve come.
What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
Do some research on natural hair and healthy hair practices. Get all of your questions about natural hair answered before you take the plunge. And of course, don’t feel pressured into doing anything that doesn’t make you feel comfortable. Remember, it’s your hair and you are free to do with it what you please.
