THE REVIEW

The Samples
I originally purchased this butter during a sample sale held in early November, which was extremely smart marketing by Pura Body Naturals.  This prepared me to decide what I would be purchasing during their Black Friday/Holiday Sale. I paid about $10 for a sample of the Cupuacu Butter, Sapote Lotion and shipping.  I was immediately impressed with not only the marketing, but the packaging of the samples.  The butter came wrapped in this special aluminum-like bubble wrap.  I assumed this helped to maintain the temperature and protect it from melting.

The Full-Size Purchase
Pura Body Naturals has a BOGO Free Black Friday/Holiday sale currently in progress, which is an awesome deal.  What makes it even better is they allow the second item to be of equal or lesser value.  I ended up purchasing 2 Cupuacu Butters, 2 Chocolate Hair Smoothies, 1 Murumuru Moisture Milk, 1 Sapote Lotion and 1 Sapote Oil. I gave a butter, smoothie and sapote lotion to a friend for Christmas.

The one thing I wished I had known before making my order is that purchases over $65 get free shipping.  My first Black Friday order came to a total just under $60.  It wasn’t until a few days ago when I was filling my cart for a second order did I see there was free shipping since my cart total was $65.50.   Why isn’t that perk publicized?

The Product
The thing that immediately struck me when I purchased the sample was the scent.  I ordered the Tahitian Vanilla and I love it!  The fragrance was not too light, but not too over powering.  Knowing these products are handmade, I can understand why there would be a discrepancy in one batch to the next.  With that said, the scent of the full-size product I ordered was not as scented as my sample.  I could actually still smell the scent of what I assumed  the natural scent of the butters. They don’t smell great. Disappointing 🙁 . I also noticed the sample sized butter also seemed to be a bit more whipped than the full-size product. The full-sized product was a bit more dense and melts quickly into a cream-like texture when in contact with body heat.

The photo above compares the sample’s texture to the texture of the full-sized product.  The product on my pointer finger is the sample which is more opaque and more of a whipped mousse like texture.  It is very light.  My middle finger contains the texture of the full-sized product which was more dense. The differences are very subtle in the picture but I prefer the texture of the sample (pointer finger). Updated: See last photo for better visual of texture difference.

Once warmed in palms, the butter easily distributed onto my hair.  I actually used this butter to seal in the moisture of the MuruMuru Moisture Milk.  I used them both on 3 occasions during the week to set and re-set my twist n curl with minimal build up. I also noticed this product had comparable hold to Qhemet Biologics CTDG  and almost defeated the horrible rainy and humid weather we were having for a few days. My hair eventually did poof up, but definitely not the worst I have experienced.  See horrible poof action HERE. And it did take quite a while to react to the humidity, which is good. Only since using Qhemet Biologcs CTDG did I start requiring my moisturizers/sealants to not only moisturize/lubricate, but to also have some holding properties, since I don’t like using gel or anything that may cause additional shrinkage or alter the texture of stretched hair. This product paired with the same brand moisturizer did exhibit those characteristics.

The duo (Murumuru Moisture Milk and Cupuacu Butter) did help to create this light  weight, Tracee Ellis Ross-esque hair.

All in all, I will be ordering again before their BOGO Free sale is over.  I definitely will be trying out the Rhassoul Hair and Body Conditioner and restocking on the Chocolate Hair Smoothie, Murumuru Moisture Milk and probably 1 more Cupuacu Butter since this 4 oz jar I currently have appears that it will last FOREVER.  A little of this stuff goes a long way and I don’t want to overstock considering the shelf life of this butter is one to two years.

ETA: The pic below is a better visual explanation of the varying textures of the butter. The Cupuacu Butter on the LEFT was purchased on Black Friday. The Cupuacu Butter on the RIGHT was purchased the week of Christmas.  Notice the butter on the left is more yellow in color.  When I received the shipment of the butter on the right, I immediately knew something was different since the jar physically felt lighter than the full-sized jar I originally had.

For validity purposes, the little bit of yellow observed on the butter on the right is because I mixed up the covers and screwed the old cover on the new jar.  Also note, the scent of the new jar is stronger than the scent of the old jar.

From the description you provided, it almost sounds like this product mimics glycerin (ability to absorb water to help maintain moisture). Many natural swear off glycerin in the winter months. Do you think that would be an issue with this product?

Hi April. Actually, it does not absorb water, but it does seal the water/moisturizer in. This product is actually great for winter and summer months because it is not as dense as say, shea butter. Thanks for your question. Hope I answered it sufficiently 🙂

You are so right that a little goes a long way and it last forever. I have a 4 oz jar that i purchased at the World Natural Hair Show in April and I am just seeing the bottom of the jar. I bought another jar during this BOGO sale and the Chocolate Smoothie. Not sure how I feel about the smoothie :/, I will try it again to give it an honest critique 🙂

I think I like the smoothie, but I will have to try it again. If it doesn’t work for you, add some honey to it. It may work better and be more moisturizing for your hair.

Oh cool! Thanks for the review. I purchased this (same scent as well) back in the summer on the advice of another fellow naturalista. Also, Pura Body was running an awesome sale on it as well. I have yet to try it, however, I think I will give this a go on the next twist out that I do…

What?! You’ve been sitting on this for the last 6 months? As soon as my sample came in the mail I could not resist the scent and had to apply! What are you waiting for chica! Crack that baby open and slather it on!
