How to| Red Lips for Black Women

What’s my secret for finding the perfect shade of red lipstick? Pick one! Ladies, do not stress about the technical stuff a makeup artist at a counter will tell you. Go with the one that makes you feel prettier or sexier. You’ll know when you put it on if it’s the one. But there are a few tips I can give you to lead you in the right direction.

Wear a Full Face of Makeup – When you try on red lipstick, have on a full-face of makeup. Red is a bright color so it can make you look washed out if you don’t at least have on foundation and a bit of eyeliner. Opt for a brown or neutral blush and a light shadow to let your luscious lips be the focus.

Try Different Shades – Red comes in various shades.  Don’t limit yourself by being committed to forcing fire engine red on your lips.  Try a darker berry color and work up to the brighter shades as you get more comfortable. Or use your lipstick as a stain by applying the color then blotting it.

Line Your Lips – If your lips are thinner, stock up on liners. You can create any shape you want by slightly overdrawing the lips then filling the line in with the lipstick.  You can also line the entire lip with the color of your choice and skip the lipstick altogether. Liners are cheaper than lipsticks and last longer. Pop a little gloss in the center of your mouth and you are good to go. By adding gloss only to the center it will give the lips a sultry pout. Don’t worry, the gloss will eventually spread all over your lips as you talk.

Remember, makeup is about freedom of expression.  Put on the color that moves you. If you do not have an emotional reaction to the lipstick, wipe it off and try another. Read more at  Madame Noire

I finally found a red that works for me. M.A.C. Ruby Woo….I just add a little bit of pink or clear gloss on top and it looks great!!!!! The matte look doesn’t do it for me alone.

i love wearing red lipstick, and i hate to hear black women say they cant do red. yes you can! i wear a very middle of the road red, coco chanel rouge lipstick in “gabrielle”. you just have to own your look when you wear any bold shade. here are some pictures of me sporting my red lip on my blog:

great post though, i completely agree on having an even tone or balanced face when wearing red for the full effect.
