Creating an Elongated Twist-Out with Old Shrunken Twists

in hair styles, my hair

Shrinkage! For many Naturals, this is the bane of our hair’s existence. If you are not afraid of indirect heat and a little tugging, this elongating technique may be for you.

These twists (above) are about a week old. I have been wearing them in a bun for the most part, but they are now old and shrunken. Lately I’ve been pushing my styles to last 2 full weeks (practicing for an upcoming vacation to the islands), but I also get bored very quickly and need to change things up a bit within those two weeks.  Here is what I did:

1. Moisturized each single twist – Remember, it has been a week and a little moisture goes a long way [tutorial filmed using a skin cream as a hair moisturizer — review soon to come]
2. Holding the ends, stretched a section of hair while blowing heat up and down the shaft of the twist – The use of a concentrator allows heat to be narrowed to a specific area
3. Untwisted each section starting at the ends – Be very careful while doing this as shed hairs may get tangled causing knots

Ladies, any questions?

Hi Reese, I’m not sure. When I twist I base it on size. These were medium-sized in my opinion. I estimate it to be well over 50 twists.

love your vids!! so to understand this right, you moisturized, stretched, then untwisted and retwisted?

Mya, All correct except for the last portion. I did not retwist. My hair was already twisted, I re-moisturized, stretched, and untwisted. That’s it! #POW
