in her confessions

How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for a little over 4 years.

What made you decide to go natural?
I made the decision to go natural after a weave installment left my hair thin and damaged.  Afterwards, I swore off blindly entrusting my hair to hairdressers, hairstylists, and friends with good intentions. I wanted to reconnect with my hair on my own terms.

While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
Recently, I’ve slackened on my routine, and honestly I see the effects of not having a firm handle on my hair regimen.  You have to put in work, if you want results.

What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
The worst hairstyle that I’ve ever had was the aforementioned  weave. Lol. The hairstyle, itself, was flawless, but the ending result was horrendous.

What is your current relationship with your hair?
Recently, I’ve slackened on my routine, and honestly I see the effects of not having a firm handle on my hair regimen.  You have to put in work, if you want results.

Currently, my hair and I have a decent relationship.  I generally know what it needs and time permitting, I try to meet it.  We all know that worthy relationships need work and nurturing, and my hair relationship is something that is no different.

What is the trick or technique are you most thankful for finding out about?
I’m thankful for finding out about how to use a conditioner to detangle my hair. I’m most thankful for all the gurus, hair blogs, and hair forums that have provided so much information for me.  They’ve allowed me to cut out a lot of the trial and error that comes with being a new natural.

What specific products can you not live without?
I’m a classic do it yourselfer because I fear becoming too reliant on products, that could become too expensive, scarce, or discontinued for whatever reason.  So, I like to use a lot of natural ingredients; avocado being my ultimate favorite conditioner. Generally though, I live by the moisturizing rule; my go to product needs to moisturize my hair, condition my hair, and hydrate my hair all at once.  I also can’t live without my fingers as I am a serious finger detangler- I know it isn’t a ‘product’ per se, but I always advocate finger detangling over using any tools in your hair.Geri2

What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
Let go of any preconceptions that you may have about your hair. Going natural involves having to reorganize the way you approach your hair care, and doing so requires a lot of unlearning

Beautiful hair and I need to do a henna application all over from root to tip also. I usually just do touch ups to cover my gray hair. As far as detangling, I need to be a finger girl to but too lazy and I guess that’s why your hair is waist length and I’m MBL LOL.
