msnikar1How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 2 years!!

What made you decide to go natural?
I started out natural until the age of 10 yrs old. I got my first relaxer at the age of 11 yrs. old. I choose to return back to my natural tresses on September 24, 2011. I didn’t like my relaxed hair because it was very thin. It never held a curl, and it would literally be stuck to my head from chemical burns. I didn’t want to go through that anymore so I chose to transition for 7 months from February 5, 2011 to September 24, 2011, and I did the big chop. I really enjoyed my short natural hair. It was so easy to manage. I just did wash n go’s. I am glad I have more length now because my twist outs last longer than it did when my hair was shorter. I’m so glad I chose to go natural.

What is your current relationship with your hair?
Well even though we have days where we don’t get along, I always know what to do to make it up to my hair for neglecting it on my tired days! We have a deep conditioning date, and after that everything is all good! I absolutely love my natural hair!
What is the trick or technique you are most thankful for finding out about?
I’m so happy I have learned the technique of flat twisting. I love the look it gives to my tightly curly hair. I’ve just recently learned of a new trick to give the illusion of an asymmetrical bob by flat twisting like normal all over your head, and then bantu knot the ends all the way up only in the back. I love it!!

msnikar2While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
I have no regrets. I would say the only mistake I made was putting a jet black permanent dye on my hair because I wanted to go a lighter color, and the black has been very hard to lift off my hair without damaging it. So it seems like I’m stuck with black hair. I don’t want to bleach it or strip it, and that’s the only way to lift the black dye off. So I’m embracing my jet black hair! I still love my hair!

What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
I always try to keep it simple, and stick to what works for me. I’ve never tried any of the crazy hairstyles or treatments. I’m really not into putting avocados, bananas, or yogurt in my hair I’d rather leave them on my plate to eat instead!

What specific products can you not live without?
I love Extra Virgin Olive oil because it penetrates the hair strand, and it leaves my hair so soft. I love Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner because it has great slip, and it leaves my hair very soft also. I also love Eco Styler Argan oil gel because it lays my edges down really well. As long as I have those three things I’m good to go because I use the Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner as a cowash and a leave in. I would apply the olive oil to seal, the gel on my edges, and I could be out the door. I’m all about simplicity!

What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
If you are considering going natural do not let the negative opinions from others stop you. You will have people that don’t like your hair, but just let them know that you like it and that’s all that matters. When I did my big chop I had coworkers tell me they hated my hair, and now those same people are telling me they love my hair. People will always have negative opinions whether you are relaxed or natural. I pay them no mind. So if you are thinking about going natural go for it, and you won’t regret it.
